Part Load Efficiency Testing

This page discusses recent research which measured the 'In-use' efficiency of packaged liquid and split DX heat-pumps and chiller systems. The study aimed to establish operating heating and cooling efficiencies of the equipment studied under a variety of loads and environmental conditions.

The operational efficiencies were calculated by comparing the measured energy consumption and energy out-put of each system during its operation. Typically this information was recorded at one minute intervals.

The system energy out-put on the liquid systems was calculated from flow and return temperature differential and flow rate of the primary water circuit. Measurement of the DX system required measuring air temperature, relative humidity and flow rate on and off the coil within the internal cassette unit. Furthermore internal and external temperature and relative humidity was recorded over the same time intervals in order to assess variation of efficiency with changes in the ambient environmental conditions.

Continued monitoring and analysis the monitoring data from this study is currently underway and we look forward to publishing the full results in the near future.
